Local Flavor Play Readings Submission Guidelines

San Diego Playwrights is partnering with Scripps Ranch Theatre to present Local Flavor Play Readings, a new play reading series for local playwrights to try out their latest full-lengths and/or one-acts that are ready for audience reaction and to facilitate the development process. The one night readings will include an audience talk-back and will be held quarterly at Scripps Ranch Theatre, with the first event to be scheduled on Monday, September 17, 2018.

  • Accepting unproduced and unpublished full-length plays and one-acts written by local playwrights living in San Diego County. No musicals, or children’s plays. Plays that have received a previous reading are acceptable, if revisions have been made.
  • One act plays must be between 10 minutes and 60 minutes; full length plays must be between 70 minutes and 2 hours. We may book one full-length play or multiple one-act plays (from more than one playwright) depending on the submissions we receive.
  • No excessive use of foul language.
  • Send play with contact information as a pdf to stevenoberman23@gmail.com
  • Include a brief bio, and a statement on where you are with the piece’s development, and how you hope a reading will help in the future development of your play.
  • Playwrights of accepted plays will be responsible for “producing” their own reading by recruiting their cast and director, supplying scripts, and coordinating rehearsals. Instructions and suggestions will be provided. Playwrights must be present for scheduled reading.
  • Suggested donation of $10 will be asked of patrons at the reading. A portion of the proceeds will go to cover playwright’s costs.
  • One submission per playwright per calendar year.
